Scientific monographs and miscellanies

Publishing reviewed scientific monographs and critical series dedicated to a large range of historic and socio-cultural themes and phenomena is one of the main tasks of the Moravian museum as a research institution. Priority is given to the bygone as well as recent history and the material and immaterial culture of Moravia as a historic country. The events connected with the Moravian territory are put into context of the Czech Lands and often even in that of the whole Central European area. This focus emerges from the traditional place of the Moravian Museum among memory institutions (both in the field of documentation of monuments of our past and present and their presentation to the large public) and from its long time ambition to present the museum as a traditional full-bodied scientific institution with a solid heuristic and scientific basis, as the museum has been perceived, after all, since its beginnings in the early 19th century. The published works deal with a large range of topics from the scientific portfolio of the social sciences (from the Moravian Palaeolithics through the Bronze and Latène Period, the famous Great Moravia, the Middle Ages, the history of money in Moravia, the personalities of Johann Gregor Mendel  or Leoš Janáček up to the presentation of important ethnological research programmes). Natural sciences cultivated in the Moravian Museum are also given space in the museum´s publications – there are books on research of the geological past and present of the Earth from all branches of geological sciences, especially mineralogy, petrology, geochemistry, structural and depositional geology, geophysics, palaeontology or new discoveries of biological disciplines (systematics, biogeography).
