Renovation of the fortified settlement in Kralice nad Oslavou

In 2004, the first volume of the world-known Czech Bible (Kralice Bible) in six parts, printed in 1579, celebrated its 425th anniversary. The Bible issued from the press of the secret printing house of the Czech Brethren that had been transfered to the Kralice castle under the protection of the noble family Žerotín from the nearby Ivančice.

In winter period 2003-2004 the renovation of the premisses of the Memorial was completed aiming for the amelioration of the presentation of the national heritage kept in the exhibition rooms and storages of the Memorial. In 2004 the visitors could again see the cellar of the stronghold in the neighbourhood of the Memorial. The cellar reaching into the former castle moat, where Vlasta Fialová from the Moravian Museum found a big amount of more than 4.000 original printing types and other typographic material during the excavations in 1956-1972, is currently used as a lapidarium of the remains of the local Renaissance castle from the 16th century unearthed during the excavations. The probable form of the castle exterior can be seen in the exhibition on the Printing house of the Czech Breathren. The lapidarium contains also funeral tin receptacles of the last holder of the Kralice stronghold Jindřich Kralický from Kralice. In the last years, the damaged vault of the entrance corridor of the cellar made the visit impossible. The long lasting lack of money in the field of culture did not enable the keeper of the site - the Moravian Museum Brno - to take the necessary measures.

Only thanks to the support by the foundation Duhová energie, the staff of the Department of History at the Moravian Museum in cooperation with the National Heritage Institute, the City Council in Náměšť nad Oslavou and the local authorities in Kralice nad Oslavou could start the renovation of the site.

As a result, the visitors to Kralice can again feel the specific atmosphere of the site and experience the place where the footprints of the history can literally be seen.
