Kingdom of Benin: Bloodstained bronzes

14. 4. – 22. 10. 2017

The exhibition deals with history, culture and art of the African Kingdom of Benin. It has been prepared to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the British punitive expedition to the Kingdom of Benin when Benin´s bronzes and other artefacts had been brought to Europe as war booty. The exhibition also describes their purchase to private collections and public institutions where they influenced avant-garde artists – representatives of expressionism, fauvism and later cubism. The display features Benin´s bronzes held in Bohemian and Moravian collections. The current production of bronze artefacts still existing in Igun Street in Benin City is mentioned in this context.
