Erwin Raupp - Moravian Hellas 1904

From October 7, 2011 to January 22, 2012

The exhibition shown in the Palace of Noble Ladies presents a selection of signed positives by Erwin Raupp, a German photographer, who visited southeastern Moravia in 1904.

Erwin Raupp (1863-1931) was renowned portraitist and landscape painter, one of the first professionals that joined the new movement of artistic photography before 1900. He was also one of the first artists to test in southeastern Moravia the possibilities of snapshots enabled by new portable cameras. In course of several weeks he photographed both everyday life and festive occasions (cattle markets in Uherské Hradiště and Uherský Brod, pilgrimages in Velehrad and Svatý Antonínek, etc.). His work is unique even in worldwide context.

The exhibited photographs, extraordinary in their content and technical elaboration, come from the collections of the Moravian Museum, the National Museum  and the Moravian-Slovak Museum in Uherské Hradiště .

The exhibition follows the publication of the same name containing all known photographs by Raupp from Moravia. The exhibition will be accompanied with several events (excursion, film and slide projection, photographic competition, lectures, and concert).
