BEDNARIK R. G.
The human ascent: a critical review

 ABSTRACT:

A critical review of the traditional taxonomy of Pleistocene archaeology emphasizes a number of aspects suggesting the need for a more appropriate system. In particular it is proposed that the focus on tools, especially stone tools, could be replaced with an emphasis on cultural indicators. A system based on technological, cognitive and cultural variables is then presented for consideration. It defines four distinctive phases of the Palaeolithic period, based on current knowledge, and it emphasizes the need for local or regional periodization during the Holocene.
